Mr. Endacott, the man selected for the lectureship in History at Hong Kong, was chosen finally because on his record he looked good enough for the Readership which the University will fill at a salary of about £1000 a year.
Endacott appeals for something more than the £600 minimum (£600-£850; was offered in our notification) of the lectureship. As he has been paid £700 a year in England, I would be inclined to ask the University to pay him not less than that amount as a commencing salary.
I send his application for your inspection. The selection committee was of one mind in picking him as very easily the best among the applicants.

Miss Ruston,
Would you be good enough to pass on, with your opinion, to Mr. Caine?
